AIRMAN’S THEFTS. PA. AUCKLAND, June 22. Aircraftsman Edward Hilton Jackton 40. to-day, admitted before the Magistrate (Mr. Levien) having stolen between August 30, 1943 and May 13. 1 94zt at Hobsonville, a Mauser pistol 356’rounds of ammunition, . and a quantity of Air Force clothing, air craft equipment, tool, electrical fitter's and roller bearings, of a total value of £276, belonging to the Air Force. Evidence was that on May 13, as the result of alleged theft of rations, men leaving the base from the unit to which Jackson belonged were examined Jackson was found in possession of Air Force property, which he said was surplus stores. Later his home was searched and a considerable quantity of Air Force property was found. In a statement to the detective, accused said: “I have stolen all the property from the Air Force, I don’t know what made me do it. When I joined the force I decided to take a pride in it. I was stationed at Woodbourne and Levin, and I saw what was going on. Since I was posted to Hobsonville, I took everything I could lav my hands on.” Accused was committed for sentence.
MAN’S BODY FOUND CAMBRIDGE, June 21
The body of Mr Herbert L. Nixon, ■;>n elderly retired watchmaker, of Cambridge, was found in the Waikato River yesterday afternoon. He was a widower and lived alone. PROTEST AGAINST MONOPOLIES GISBORNE, June 22.
At a meeting in Gisborne of producers, traders an r j consumers called by the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, a resolution was passed expressing resentment at the ‘‘conferr'ner of a monopoly on an outside firm for handling essential foodstuffs as such restraint of trade will lead 'o a dim'nution of supplies, unfairly nonal’se bus'ness, encourage black marketing and react detrimentally to d’strlct consumers.” A further motion was carried protesting against the high-handed and dictatorial way (he Minister acted in giving a license to handle Gisborne district eggs to an cutside firm, as there were .already marketing facilities in Gisborne.
