An Allied communique from Italy says: Strong forces of escorted heavy bombers on Thursday, despite unfavourable 1 weather, bombed oil re-, finery installations at Polesti, and rail yards at Belgrade and Nish. , The German News Agency stated that Rumanian .and German fighters engaged the Allied bombers over Serbia and Rumania, and shot down at least 25. The Lancaster was attacked after bombing Mailly. The enemy's f.re damaged the Lancaster’s control services, petrol supply system, starboard main plane, collanl tanks, magneto, and engine structure, and put out of action the mid-upper turret. Gibson put the ’plane into a dive. The Nazi then attacked but the Lancaster’s fire hit him, and he burst into flames, dived, and exploded on the. ground.
