[Our Own Correspondent]. High Tides—Port of Westport: a.m. p.m. Wednesday May 3, 07.15 07.41 Mr. C. F. S'chadick has returned from Christchurch. A Red Cross contingent from the North Canterbury Centre arrived on Sunday from Canterbury with blankets and goods for the victims of Saturday morning’s tornado. A letter from the President of the Centre (Dr. Leslie Will) which was handed to the Mayor on arrival of the contingent stated: “The bearer of this letter will convey to you, on behalf of the Red Cr.oss, North Canterbury Centre, goods which I hope you will find of some use in the relief of any suffering that has been caused to your people as the result of the tornado. I wish to convey to you our sympathy with the people of Westport, and we are also pleased to be able to express our sympathy in a practical way.” Coal from Charleston is at. present arriving in Westport for railage to Christchurch and other stations en route. The W.E.A. class in practical science which Mr. J. McDonald is conducting this winter has as its subject “Your life after the war.” A discussion group to consider ■ the question, “After the war, What?” is meeting in conjunction with the class. The lectures, which are being held in the Borough Council Chamber, are open to the, public. In the first round of the Coronation Cup match, played at the Kawatiri golf links on Sunday, the best scores were: Petersen 81, 10, 71; Bropen 86, 14, 72; J. Woodward 88, 14, 74; F. Woodward 95, 21, 74; Brown 90, 15, 75; Jones 84, 8, 76; Macklow 87, 11, 76; Burt 91, 14, 77; Flavstead 91, 14, 77; Dr. Thompson 101, 24, 77; E. Phibbs 90, 12, 78. The first senior football match of the season was played at the weekend on the Trotting Ground, when United defeated Combined by 29 to 9. Mr. F. McGreevy was referee.
