TRAVEL PERMITS
NOT REQUIRED ON GOODS TRAINS.
As from to-day, permits will not be required for travel exceeding liity miles by mixed trains, or goods trains with car, though they are still necessary for rail-car, and express travel. This has been announced by the Railway’s Department. As a result. Greymouth residents may now travel to Christchurch and back on the goods train which leaves each evening, without being required to secure a permit, though no additional accommodation will oe provided on these trams. Only one car - is at present run on the Greymouth—Christchurch goods train SCHOLARS’ HOLIDAY TRAVEL.
School children, during the holidays which commence next Friday, may now travel bv rail on journey’s further than fifty miles, without a' permit, according to an announcement by the Minister of Railways (Hon. R. Semple). This further relaxation in the travel restrictions will remain in force until further notice. No extra carriage accommodation will be macie available, and children will not be allowed to reserve seats, having to take a chance of obtaining a seat. It there are too many wahting to travel, the Department will not sell them tickets and they will have to wait until accommodation becomes available. It is possible that a limited number of children will be allowed to stand. ANOTHER RELAXATION ? R.A. WELLINGTON. April 30. Though no official statement is available, it is understood that there is to be a measure of relaxation from to-morrow, in the restrictions on railway travel, whereby permits are required for journeys over 50 miles. The existing restrictions are likely to be retained for travel by fast express trains, but it is expected that journeys up to 100 miles will be allowed without a permit on all other passen--1 ger trains, subject to the accommodation available. No additional facilities, either bv accepting reservations or bv running extra trains, are likely to be supplied to meet any increased travelling demand, as a result of this easing of restrictions.
