UNLAWFUL SALE OF LIQUOR. NELSON, April 29. Fines totalling £7O were imposed bv the Magistrate (Mr Maunsell) on Ernest Charles Lawrence, ,proprietor, of the Portage Guesthouse, Kenepuru Sound. Defendant pleaded guilty to three charges of se mg liquor unlawfully, and one of illegally keeping liquor for sale. Sergeant Corston said a constable stayed at the Portage as a paying guest, and sales of bottles of beer were made on three days. Defendant was fined £35 tor keeping liquor, and £l5, £lO and £lO on each of the three charges ot selling. MANPOWER RAID. P.A. WELLINGTON, April 29. Making their first raid on a tearoom yesterday afternoon, Wellington manpower authorities exercised nice discretion in choosing those to be approached. The place visited was a large, popular establishment. People seated at the tables were not approached, but selected women were quietly interrogated by the manpower authorities as they left the tearoom or lounge. Questioning was confined to women who appeared within the age registration groups up to 40 years. Women over 40 who were approached could rightly feel flattered. Women accompanied by children, were not questioned. LYTTE LTO N WATE R FRO NT DISPUTE. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH. April 29 When a request by the men that an officer should be stationed at each hatch of the Rangatira to watch the discharging and loading of cargo this morning was refused, seven gangs of Lyttelton watersiders who had been engaged for the. work declined to start.. The men accepted engagement and went aboard the vessel but did not start work. Later in the morning an official of the Waterside Workers’ Union made application to the company on behalf of the men for officers to be stationed at the hatches. It is said that the request was made' because the men were concerned about a recent case of pillaging. The Rangatira brought 270 tons of cargo from the north, including three hundred' cases of oranges and lemons. There was also a quantity of cargo to be picked up for the north.
