Hon. J. Ryall? M.L.C., was a passenger from Greymouth by Saturday’s express.
Mr. A. R. Fricker, who has been relieving as a railway guard at Greymouth, has returned to Christchurch.
Mr. J. D. H. Howell is to resume duty with the railway traffic staff ar Greymouth, following service with the armed forces overseas.
Among American Naval visitors to Greymouth at present is the Rev. C. McHale, Chaplain, who yesterday morning officiated at St. Patrick’s Church.
Advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. R. Bellis, .of Karoro, that their son, Raymond, has been transferred from Italy to a prisoner of war camp in Germany.
Mr Robert Wilson and Mr Henri Penn with their manager, Mr Nathan Scheinwald, of the Australian Greater Artists’ Society, will leave for Reefton by rail-car to-morrow morning.
Mr H. I. Turnbull, headmaster of the Dobson School, who has been confined to his bed for over a week is now improving and is able to walk about for short periods each day. A relieving teaching has been appointed at the school.

Sayegh, who was the Labour candidate in the last three Mayoral elections were the other nominations. Mr. W. Haymes of Cobden, formerly a member of the staff of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth, who recently returned from service overseas with the Second N.Z.E.F., has been appointed Clerk of the Court at Ashburton and will take up his duties shortly.

The death occurred yesterday at Christchurch of the Rev. Father Edwin Anderson, who formerly was for a period stationed at Hokitika. A native of Christchurch, the late Father Anderson was 55 years of age. He had been for some time in failing health. Noted for his studious character, he had exceptional lingquistic ability and was for many years a member of the professorial staff of Holy Cross Ecclesiastical College, Mbsgiel, Otago. He was a brother of Mr Johannes C. Anderson, the wellknown New Zealand writer, and Director of the Turnbull Library Wellington.
Sergeant Graham Speight, who has been in the armed forces for four years has been awarded the Hugh Campbell Scholarship, awarded yearly by the Auckland Law Society to the candidate with the most distinguished ' scholastic record and considered most worthy to proceed to a higher degree, states a Press Association message from Auckland. Sergeant Speight gained his LLiB. degree just before leaving for the Italian front, where his battery is now serving. His elder brother, Lieutenant Murray Speight who is also on active service, won one of the last, Rhodes Scholarships awarded in New Zealand before the war.
The death took place at Hokifka yesterday of Mrs. Catherine Stewart, who with her late husband, Constable Stewart, resided for many years at Kumara. A member of the family of Hampden Street, she was born at Hokitika 72 years ago, and she had latterly resided for a number of years in Hampden Street. She leaves a family of four daughters, Mesdames J. Duncan (Hokitika), M. Brand (Woolston), D. Mcßae (Ikamatua), W. Coleman (Blackball) and three sons, Jack (Blenheim). Edward (Greymouth) and Frank (Hoiktika). Her brother, Mr. Septimus Foster predeceased her a few months ago. The funeral will take place to-mor-row.
Many West Coast friends will regret to learn of the death of Mr. George Elliott Newlands, of St. Andrew’s Square, Christchurch, and formerly .of Brunnerton, which oc'qurred at. iG'hristchuiJch yesterday; morning. ’ A' native of Brunner, he was 55 years "of age, and until he removed seven years ago to Christchurch, he conducted for many years a drapery business at Brunner. He was in his early manhood an athelete of note, and a prominent Rugby footballer, having been in the senior team lof the Star Club here. Besides his : widow he leaves a son, Gordon, of Christchurch, and is also survived by three sisters, Mesdames A. Shannon (Greymouth) T. Franklin (Christchurch) and R. Jenkins (Otaki). The funeral takes place at Christchurch to-morrow morning.
I The death occurred on Saturday 'morning at the Grey River Hospital |of Mrs. Beatrice Elizabeth Smith, jwife of Mr. Edward Smith, of Rapahoe. She was aged 48. Mrs Smith suffered a sudden seizure in Greymouth on Friday evening and was taken to the hospital. She was born lin Ashburton, where in her youth she was a teacher of dancing and was well-known as an athlete. She came to Rapahoe 17 years ago. With Jier [husband she conducted the Rapahoe Hotel for two years. Besides her husband she is survived by her father Mr. A. Wilkie,, four sons, one daughter, two sisters and three brothers in Canterbury. The funeral took place at the Karoro cemetery yester'day afternoon, Rev. T. G. Campbell [conducting the services at Sampson’s Chapel and at the graveside.
