RUNANGA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent.] Arrangements have now been made for Runanga children attending secondary schools in Greymouth to travel home by a bus which will leave Greymouth an hour earlier than the train by which the children , previously travelled. The children’s fares will be paid by the parents, though it is intended to ask for a subsidy towards the cost. No other passengers will be carried by the service which will be available to children for the first time on Monday. In the past a bus has returned to Runanga empty after bringing miners to Greymouth, and the parents of Runanga children had appealed to the education and transport authorities for its use. At Thursday evening’s meeting of the Runanga Debating Society, presided over by Mr. Ron. McTaggart, a parliamentary debate took place on “The Grey River Harbour Bill, 1944.” Messrs W. Williams, H. Webb. R. Bowman, J. Kelly, S. Kennedy and R. McDonald formed the Government party, and the Opposition speakers were Messrs Ron. McTaggart, F. Tinning, A. Airns, W. Patterson, Robt. McTaggart and A. Keown. Mr S. Braithwaite was “Mr. Speaker. ’ The possibility of again holding the Kent Honours Board debating competition was discussed in a letter received from the St. Mary’s Club, Hokitika, and it was agreed that endeavours shou.d be made to resume the competition. It was reported that a ladies oeba'ting club is being formed in Kunanga. ■
