N.Z. RADIO STATIONS

DAILY CLOSING DOWN OF HALF-AN-HOUR. P.A. WELLINGTON, April 28. As from Monday, May 1, all broadcasting stations in New Zealand will close down between 8.15 a..m. and 8.45 a.m. from Mondays to Fridays Inclusive. This was announced in a jo'nt statement to-night by the Minister of Supply (Hon. D. G. Sullivan), and the Minister of Broadcasting ("Hon. F. Jones). The statement said that this reduction in the hours of broadcasting was considered necessary in order to assist in the conservation of electricity. The consumption of electricity by broadcasting stations was comparatively small, but the total consumption by all the receiving sets was considerable. During the periods that broadcasting stations were clos-i ed down all consumers with receiving sets should switch them off, and by | doing this, a considerable saving In electricity would be effected. The statement added that as the winter period anproached with its heavy demands for electricity, it might be necessary to curtail further the hours of broadcasting in order to effect further economies in the use of electricity. ’
