HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, March 31. At the annual meeting of the Westland Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party the following officers were elected: President, Mr. E. W. Heenan; Vice-i President, Mr. C. Briscoe; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. Chas Upjohn; Executive Committee, Messrs H. C. Harvey, T. N. Haddock, J. S. Davern, C. Henderson, H. Plaines, and I’. N Warren. The annual balance sheet and report were adopted, also a statement covering election receipts and payments. A vote of appreciation was accorded the Treasurer for the excellent manner in which he had carried out his duties. It was resolved to write the Borough Council expressing appreciation of its proposal to embody in the new municipal buildings a modern theatre, and to convey to the Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, congratulations in fostering the proposal. The Branch further resolved to lend ail possible assistance to the Mayor and Councillors in bringing the proposal to a successful conclusion. It was decided to hold monthly meetings and to meet on the last Wednesday in each month. The following resolution was adopted: (“That this annual meeting of the | Westland Labour Party tender its hearty congratulations to the Hon. |H. G. Mason, Attorney-General, and to the' Government on the passing of the Invercargill Licensing Bill. The Branch feels that this act will be a milestone in social progress of the Dominion and in dealing with the complex issues involved in the licensing question.” The presentation of a charter from Rotary lln'ternational to the club recently formed here was made at a meeting by the District Governor, Mr. Charles Taylor, others associated with him being Messrs Wm. G. Fernie, H. B. Duckworth, A. Eckroyd, E. E. Weston, A. Maker, L. Stevens (all of Christchurch); A. A. McDonald (Ashburton); D. H. Taylor (Wellington); Wm. Steere (Gre.ym.outh) and other visiting Rotarians. The Charter number for Hokitika was given as 5711, Mr. H. M. Coulson received the charter on behalf of the Hokitika Club. Addresses were given by Messrs Fernie, McDonald, Steere and Duckwortll News has been received of the death on active service of Second Lieutenant Carson Welsh, of Seward Downs, Southland, who prior to enlistment was employed at the Westland Hospital in charge of the farming operations. He was a popular employee and made a success of the Board’s farm. Leaving as a private he gained his commission overseas, having served since the outbreak. Advice was also received of the death on active service of Lieutenant Keith Davies, who prior to enlistment was in the service of the Bank of New South Wales here. He was a member of Kilwinning Masonic Lodge. His parents reside in Westport.
