BRUNNER NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent,] Mrs. F. Lockington presided over the monthly meeting of the Brunner Women’s Institute. The motto was “Kindness is, Like Grain, Increased by Sowing.’' 1 The competition, three vegetables and a' jar of flowers, brought forth numerous entries which made an attractive show, the winners being; Vegetables: Mrs. W. Guti berlet 1, Mrs. J. Rodgers 2; flowers: Mrs. W. Richardson 1, Mrs. W. Gutberlet 2. Names were drawn for six soldiers’ parcels to be despatched to local boys serving overseas. A mystery parcel was won by Mrs. Todd, and the raffle of cup saucer and plate in aid of the Soldiers’ Reception Committee was won by Mrs. Eennie, Taylorville. The annual meeting of the Brunner Brass Band was held in the Band Room on Sunday last, Mr. W. Gutberlet presiding. The balance sheet was adopted as satisfactory. The fallowing officers w'ere elected: Patron, Mr. F. Low; President, Mr. W. Gutberlet; Vice 'Presidents, Messrs R. Fordham, S. Malmanche, B. Boustridge, G. Nimmo, J. Taylor, M. Bennie, J. Smeaton, J. Rodgers and Mrs. Rostern, the committee having power to add to this list; Conductor, Mr. G. Pattison; Deputy Conductor, Mr. Agnew; Drum Major, Mr. G. Rutter; Sergeant, Mr. C. Reid; Corporal, Mr. G. Banks; Lance Corporal, Mr. H. C'outes; Sec.-Treasurer, Mr. T. Miller; Librarian, Mr. C. Reid; Committed of Band Members, Messrs T. Morgan, R. Leaker, A. Tikey and P Galway>. Public Members: T. McKenzie, F. Fletcher and W. Purdy. Mr. and Mrs. W. Lee have left on a visit to Christchurch. A very pleasant evening was spent by members of the Brunner W.W.S.A. during the week, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. Smith, on the occasion of the presentation of a silver powder bowl, suitably inscribed, to the Coy. Commander of the W.W. S. Miss M. Hill. Mr. G. Smith, Instructor of the W.W.S'.A. made the presentation, and on behalf of the Auxiliary Girls thanked Miss Hill, for her unstinted services during the time that the Auxiliary has been in operation. Games and competitions, and a delightful supper were enjoyed by all. During an extensive tour of the South Island circles of the Junior Red Cross, Miss Small, Dominion Director, visited Taylorville School on, Thursday last to meet the local circle. She was accompanied by Mrs. Ramsay Reid, Mrs. Alan Smith, and Mrs. Fairmaid of the Greymouth Red Cross Society. Miss Small expressed appreciation of the children’s war effort, which included lhe knitting of 27 scarves, 13 balaclavas, 4 pairs of mittens, 4 pullovers, a double blanket and two single blankets in squares. In addition a' vegetable plot had been established at the school and 15 kitchen garden plots at the children’s homes. She brought with her a beautiful portfolio from New Brunswitk members and expressed the hope that a similar effort might be made by, the Taylorville children. Such portfolios are exchanged between various countries to form a connecting link between them. This year’s patron, president, secretary-treasurer and committee have been elected, and will set to work immediately to continue their war effort. At the conclusion of her address Miss Small and party i were entertained to afternoon tea at I the school house. I
