MILLION DEAD

FAMINE IN CHINESE PROVINCE. (Rec. 11.40.) CHUNKGING, Jan. 31. Mr George Edgar Adams, Secretary of the American Advisory Committee, here, to-day said: “One million Chinese died of famine and cholera in the Kwangtung Province. Eighty per cent, of the population of some villages was wiped out by famine and disease. Countless thousands of children have become orphans, many of whom have become migrant beggars. Whole families have been destroyed, and the entire social and Economic structure of a hard-working. progressive people has crumbled.” Mr. Adams said he attributed the famine to a plague of locusts, speculation in rice, and hoarding.
