NEW YORK, Feb. 1 Leading American steamship tines have announced the formation of, a National Federation of American Shipping. It is designed to provide the United States shipping interests with an authoritative voice in tne post-war programmes. This is reported by the the New York Times Washington correspondent. Mr. Almon Roth is President of the Federation, which is modelled on the oeri" '.eral Council of British Shipping. Mr. Roth explained that it would speaK for the American shipping industry in what would inevitably be delicate relations with foreign Governments, and shipping interests, especially that of the British, whq are already alarmed over the American P lans for a big post-war merchant ,He added that it is aimed to protect the legitimate interests of the United States, without injuring Britain or other nations through destructive competition. He said that the united States is expected to own fortyfive million tons of merchant slupping after the war as compared witn only ten million tons before the wai. Another objective of the American Federation was to seek the . for American shipping companies jo participate in overseas commercial aviation. He said that the Britisn Government indicated its intention of supplementing British shipping companies with airline operations under unified management, and tne American ship owners feared that they would be placed' at a disadvantage unless they are granted tne same right.
