MR. F. BIRD RETIRES

SEVERAL FUNCTIONS HELD

Mr. Frank Bird, Registrar ,of the /Supreme Court at Greymouth for the last eight and a-half years, who retired from that position at the end of January, was on Monday met at several social functions. Mr. Bird has been .associated with the Justice Department for 1 42 years and has been in the Government’s service for 46 years. Mr. J. W. Hannan was the principal speaker at a function arranged I by the legal fraternity of Greymouth I and Mr. F. A. Kitchingham and Mr. ■W. D. Taylor also spoke. Mr. Hannan handed Mr. Bird an envelope of notes and expressed the thanks and good wishes of those present. Replying, Mr. Bird recalled early days on the West Coast and thanked the speakers for what they had said. Mr. D. Malcolm, who will succeed Mr. Bird in the meantime, was introduced to the gathering. , Apologies . for absence were received from Messrs H.-W. Kitchingham and T. E. I Coates.

At a gathering of law clerks, thanks and good wishes were expressed by Messrs T. P. Ryan, A. M. Ja-1 inieson, P. Joyce and W. ißraith- 1 waite. A presentation of a chromium smoker’s stand was made by Mr. Ryan. Mr. Bird said it had always been a pleasure for him to do all he could to assist the clerks of the legal profession, and he would still be available if ever they desired any help. Even more than the presentation he valued their goodwill. When the Court office closed the staff met Mr. Bird at afternoon tea J in the Magistrate’s room. . Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M., said it had been a pleasure to be associated with Mr. Bird durng the past four years. He was glad he would not be leaving the district, and did not doubt that his assistance would continue to be sought. He could look back at the end of a long career on a lob well done. On behalf o± the Court staff, Mr. Chisholm presented Mr Bird with a leather wallet, initialled in gold and extended good wishes. . „ . Mr. A. S. Hamilton, Government Auditor, Miss M. Harris. Mr. C. Morel (members of the Court staff), ' and Mr. D. Malcolm (relieving Clerk lof the Court) also spoke. Mr. Bird Said.jhe was not concluding his service without regret. In his years of association with the Department, he had been very fortunate in the staffs, who had given him every assistance. It had always been his practice io bo of help in every possible way, instead of a hindrance, and he had never yet had a word with a Magistrate. He had been pleased to be associated with Mr. Chisholm. He thanked all present for their co-operation and extended good wishes to them.
