HARIHARI NOTES

I (Our Own Correspondent) I The sports meeting held here on ! Saturday afternoon in aid of the local patriotic fund was largely at1 tended, visitors being present from IWeheka, Waiho, Wataroa, Ross and 'Waitaha. The day was sunny with a dry ground. The main events comprised local horse racing, and all the contests proved very close finishes. In addition there were chopping and sawing contests, and I foot races for ladies and men and I several children’s events. The tea i rooms were conducted by a strong I ladies’ committee, and they had good I business all the afternoon. Mr J. ' Mitchell must be complimented, m the ’manner he got off the various | events to time. A special word oi thanks is due to the willing hands who had charge of the various side shows, not forgetting the one who looked after the coppers. Morresey of Cobden is heie j on a visit, and is staying at the local i Anderson, of Hokitika, has i taken a position with the Railway I Road Service here. . I The late Mr William Glass whose i death took place last Thursday was well known here, having spent all 1 h’s life at Mount Hercules. He is sur- ! vived by his mother and sisters, Mrs IG Deckon (Totara Flat) and Mrs iDehn (Otago), and by four brothers, Charles, James. John and David. Hie funeral which was a lengthy one, I took place at the local cemetery on Friday afternoon, Rev. Mr Doig, of Ross, conducting the services. At the latter end of the month a ball is to be held here in aid of the local swimming baths fund. Mr W. Foster, who has been on an extended visit to Christchurch, has returned. Mrs S. Adamson has returned after being a patient in the Westland Hospital. Mrs McMillan, of Christchurch, is in Harihari on a brief visit. Mr P. McCormack, of Waiho, was a visitor on Saturday for the sports. Mr W. H. Stopforth, of Hokitika, was a visitor on Friday and was present at the funeral of the late Mr V/. Glass. Mr and Mrs R. Ferguson and sons, are on a visit to Christchurch. Miss S. Rowley has left to enter the Grey Technical School. The local school re-opens to-day (Wednesday). The Misses Scott of Kar.angarua, are on a visit to Mrs E. Diedrich, of Evan’s Creek. Mrs W. Robertson, of Reefton, is here on a visit. Mrs Berry has returned after .a visit to Hokitika. Mi’ W. Searle, senr., of Hokitika, was a week-end visitor to- Harihari. Rev. Mr Williams is on his usual Far South visit to J'ackson Eay. Messrs G. Rowley (County Chairman) and J. Donovan (Okarito), paid a visit to Hokitika on Thursday last to be present at the funeral of the late Mr D. J. Evans. Miss L. Woodham has returned after visiting the North Island. Mrs W. Sutherland is on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs A. Graham is on an extended visit to Blenheim.
