Mrs. S. Crabb of Nelson is on a visit, to her brother, Mr. W. B. Auld. Mrs. O. Hov and daughter are spending a holiday as the • guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. Hoy. Yesterday a partv of bowlers travelled to Westport to play a series ot' games. Although the-losers they spent an enjoyable time. The Bishop of Nelson, Right Rev. P. W. Stephenson, visited Reefton recently conducting Confirmation service in St. Stephen’s Church. Twenty candidates were presented for confirmation. Mr. Frank Hallaran with the assistance of Mr. E. Goodall, rescued a young man who was nearly drowned the other evening in the Inangahua River, he being unable to swim, and getting into a hole Owing to a continued dry spell of weather it ha s been found necessary to conserve the town’s water supply. Each night the reservoirs are shut oft from 10 to 5 a.m., in order to save enough for fire fighting purposes. Residents would be well advised not to light any grass fires that may ger out of control. Matches played on the Reefton Tennis Club’s courts during the week resulted as follows:—Championship Buttons: Ladies’ Doubles: Misses Archer and McVicar (holders) lost to Mrs. Findlay and Miss O’Malley, by default; Mrs. Findlay and Miss O’MalJev (holders) defeated Mrs. Marshall and Miss Noble 7/6. Championship Buttons: Men’s Doubles: F. Archer and Sharpe defeated A. Archer and Lundon 9/4 Hubbard Buttons: Ladies’ Doubles: Miss Bierwirth and Mrs. Lawrv (holders) lost to Misses Simmiss and Wright 4/7. Hubbard Buttons: Combined Doubles: Miss O’Malley and Levy (holders) lost to Miss Paterson and Boot by default; Miss Paterson and Boot (holders) lost to Miss Bremner and Turner 4/7. Ladder Singles; Mrs. Findlay defeated Mrs. Marshall 7/5; Miss Paterson lost to Miss O’Flaherty 4/9; Mrs. Findlav defeated Miss O’Flahorty 9/5. At the monthly meeting of the Council of Reefton School of Mines Mr. J. B. Auld, who presided, reported that an inspection had been made of the school building by the Public Works Department to report on the need for painting and renovation. During a visit to Wellington, he had interviewed the Under-Secretary, Mines Department, in support of the an-di cation to have this work carr’et out. The Director. Mr. W. J. Bolitho, reported that classes for the year had ended. During the month 17 students from the school sat for under-? viewers’ and deputies’ examinations. The assay position continues to be satisfactory; 20 were carried out for the month as follows: Bullion Assays 15, quartz samples 5, coal dust samp-
les 1. It was resolved that the school close for two weeks at Christmas, Mr. J. B. Auld to carry out the assaywork during the Director’s absence on holiday. The provision of an anomometer for the school laboratory was discussed. A member reported ah offer made bv District Inspectors of Mines of lecture to students on coal mining subjects. It was decided that the offer be made use of in the year.
