ATTACK DEFENCELESS (PARACHUTISTS. (Rec. 8.45) SYDNEY, Dec. 3. The crew of a Liberator bomber, one of two which were lost during an attack on Wewak on Thursday, were strafed by Japanese pursuit planes as ilieyi parachuted into the sea. Airmen who returned from this mission said that nve Zeros broke their formation to strafe the defenceless parachutists. They flew within fifty feet of the victims. In an Allied air raid, Wewak, the important enemv base on the northeast New Guinea coast was pounded with more than a hundred tons _ of bombs. Ten out of forty intercepting Japanese fighters were shot down. Two Allied planes were lost.
