There was a very enjoyable evening last Saturday night, when the Roa Tennis Club, held a dance in the Roa Hall. An excellent supper was served by the Ladies’ Committee, while popular music for dancing was provided by Mrs. Bateman.- Messrs A. O’Donnell and I. McGougan acted as efficinet M’s.C. A Monte Carlo was won bv Mr. and Mrs. G. Ware of Ngahere. On November 19 a banquet to commerate the 25th anniversary of the Rugby League Club in Blackball, was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mr. L. Neilson presiding over a large gathering of followers of the code, including visitors from the League Centre and from Marist, R.unanga and Ngahere clubs. The tables were tastefully decorated and were loaded with an array of good things, thanks to the energy and efficiency of the Ladies’ Committee. The opportunity was taken to present Mrs. H. J. Campbell, Dominion Hotel, with a gold wristlet watch suitably inscribed as a mark of the appreciation and high esteem in which she is held by the local club and its supporters. Mrs. Campbell’s position mav set a record for the Dominion as she has been President of the club for an unbroken period of 25 years., having been appointed when the club was formed a quarter of a century ago. Mr. Jas Campbell, replying for his mother, feelingly thanked the club for their magnificent gift and pledged her unwavering interest in the local club and all its doings. Items were given bv Mrs. E. The evening was beautifully fine and the meeting took place opposite the Miners’ HaL previous to the picture show. There was an attentive crowd and the chair was taken by Mr. R. Clark. Questions were asked and satisfactorily answered and the speaker was accorded a 'hearty vote of thanks for his splendid address. Again on Wednesday evening the N.Z.C.P. put on another open air meeting, when Mrs. Elsie Locke of Christchurch was the speaker There was an attentive audience who listened to a fine address on working class politics ana an anneal for working class solid.arty. Mr. J. Davies presided. This was Mrs. Locke’s first visit to Blackball. It seems a p’.tv that an indoor meeting had not been arranged. I J trust this will be done in future. I The regrettable accident, resulting I in the death of Mr. H. H. Taggart, on I the Ngahere dredve, Atarau Road, on Thursday forenoon, cast a gloom over village. Mr Taggart had been employed on repair work when, through some unexplained cause, the tumbler on which he was working, started to revolve and he was drawn in, suf-

fering such injuries that he died on his way to hospital. He was a quiet unassuming man and was well liked by his work mates. He had only been working on the Ngahere Dredge for a few months, and had previously followed un dredging work in other parts of the district. To his mother and other relatives, the deepest sympathy will be extended in their sudden and sad bereavement.
