Tne Kaitoa is que 10-aay trum Nelson and loads icr Motueka; The Karepo is due irom Wellington to-day and will load tor Auckland. Mr. W. McNamara is visiting Cnriscchurch for the New Zealand Clip meeting. Mrs. Rosenberg, of Motueka, is visiting Westport where sbe formerly resided. , Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Colvin left this morning on a visit to Rangiora and Christcnurch.
Mr. A. Lockey, senr., is visiting Maruia Springs. Mr. W. Roche is leaving for Christchurch to-day to be present at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Mr. B. Blair presided at the Buller Hospital Comforts Committee meeting held last evening. Tenderers for invalid chairs intimated that a cha’r was being forwarded and four more would be sent soon. The tender of a Greymouth firm for the making of 12 fireside chairs and two couches was accepted. A Westport firm's tender for the supply of two radio sets was accepted. Accounts for £6 were passed tor payment. Mr. J. M. Robertson, Chairman of Buller District Patriotic Committee, acknowledges the following sums for 1943 appeal. Collection box, Bank of- N.S'.W. 15s 8d: Karamea-Market Cross Patriotic Committee, per Mr. J. C. Main £lO 14s; for soldiers’ parcel, Mr. H. Todd 6s. The Buller Hospital Comforts Committee acknowledges donations of £5 5s from the Cascade Co-operative Partv and £1 Is from Buller A and P. Association.
At the fortnightly meeting of the Soldiers’ Relations Club, arrangements were made to hold the children’s Christmas oarty on Saturday, December 18. This vear there will be no age limit, and all children ■whose fathers are serving in the Army, at home or overseas, will be welcomed. Members will be grateful if parents or guaraians of cnildreri desirous of attending will leave tneir names at Mr. spencer’s shop. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mesdames Norris and Ninnes. In accordance with the Rehabilitation Committee's policy to place former servicemen in occupations with life-time prospects, the Buller Committee proposes to establish at Westport a carpentry training centre, and is awaiting approval from Wellington to . proceed with its plans. Ten returned servicemen and four former home servicemen are at present offering for the class, which, when started, will be gradually enlarged. The Westport Boys’ Band will spend the week-end of December 3 and 4 in Reefton, and will give two concerts for local patriotic funds. The party will be billeted by Reefton citizens during thoir stay in the town.
■ Six boys of the W.T.H.S. have volunteered to take up seasonal work during the scji.oo'l holidays. Last War four bovs went to Nelson for the fruit-picking season. At the last meeting of the board of managers, Mr. Metson, the principal, reported that the pupils had held a meeting and had asked that a school cap,’ the design of which had been approved, should be worn. The Board approved of the wearing of a cap, but with no compulsion. Arrangements are being made for the Railway Department to take over the Westport-Inangahua Junction section of railway line on Saturday December 4. The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Railways and Public Works will visit Westport on that occasion and it is hoped that the Member for the district, Hon. P. C. Webb, will also be present. When the transfer is made the new section will be amalgamated with the northern district, South Island, and will be administered bv the District Traffic Manager, Christchurch, while train running operations will be controlled bv the Stationmaster at Greymouth. Grevmeuth, made on inspection of the section during the week, and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the final stages of the work. Clearing-up w’H take about four or Gve weeks. The construction of the line has extended over a long neriod, as there have been several interruptions.
