DENNISTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] The Denniston Miners’ Union intend to build a social and public hall at Marshallvale, which will be greatly appreciated by the general public. Building operations will commence shortly after Christmas. Mr.' A. Hunter was a visitor to Westport last week-end. ' It is stated he has been looking over the horses with an eye to possibilities. The genial Albert riarvy has taken up the art of the comedian, and as a mimic is showing talent such that the organisers of local concerts might do worse than include him in a programme. 'fhe back shift from the Wareatea Mine (decided to finalise the cavil at Fairdown and finished up without a hit.cn.

There are many complaints from residents regarding radio interference, and the cause of these noises should immediately receive attention, as the nuisance has been going on for a lengthy period, both in the day and night time. At a meeting of residents to hear an address by Hon. P. C. Webb, the question of a supply of fish for this locality was brought up by Mr. J. Dellaway. His advocacy, of a service was enthusiastically supported by those present. The Denniston Women's Institute held their monthly meeting wAh a good attendance in the R.S.A. rooms, Mrs. Blake presiding. The roll can to recite a verse was answered by all members. Mrs. G. Keliy gave ,a golden thread talk that proved very amusing. It was decided that a national savings account book be obtained for three babies recently born lo a members. Mrs. S. Jack gave ner report on the conference held m Christchurch. A donation was voted to the Makogai Lepers' Fund, and one also to the Health Camp Fund. It was reported that ten soldiers’ parcels have been packed by the committee for soloiers overseas. It was decided to organise an eltort to raise money for a children’s picnic. A Husband’s evening was arranged for the near future, a short sketch to be on as entertainment. Mrs. E. Ward gave her report, for Buller Federation meeting held in Westport. Tne Institute was approached regarding the support of a youth movement at Denniston. It was resolved that as the senior combined, bible class had been compelled to disband, the Institute vzas in favour of assisting the youth movement. An ex member rejoined the Institute. Supper was served by tne hostesses. The social half hour was conducted by Blake and Nelson, Mr. Hill being the winner of the game. A “bring and buy” and a sales table were well supported. The meeting closed with the singing of “Auld Lang S'yne.” The weekly card tournament was held in the Clubrooms on Wednesday evening. The winner of the men’s prize was Mr. Kerr, and of the ladies’ Mrs W. Bamford. A presentation was made at the High School by Miss A. Walker on behalf of the staff and pupils, to Mrs F. Millbank (nee Miss E. Pullar) in view of her recent marriage. Mrs. Millbank suitably replied. Last Saturday evening Private W. Pearson was tendered a social by the members .or the local Orange Lodge, Mr. G. Jack presiding, and extending the guest a cordial welcome with good wishes in view of later return ‘ to camp. Songs were given by Messrs G. Jack, W. Meek, G. Nelson, duets by Messrs Jack and G. Cockburn, ami Messrs Nelson and Meek, and trio by Messrs W. Cooper, W. Pearson and E. Ward. Private Pearson thanked those present for their hospitality and said he hoped soon to return again. “Auld Lang Syne” and the National

Anthem closed a very pleasant evening. L.A.C. G. Haslam, is at present spending holidays with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Haslam of Burnetts Face. Mrs. R. Wooding has returned after spending holidays at Hokitika. S'gt. Grant and - L/Cpl. Martin were visitors to Westport this week and had a pleasant time. The forty-fives tournament held oy the Burnetts Face Library has been completed, the winners being the Russell Brothers. This tournament should be a financial benefit to the Library, which has shown a decided improvement inside and out. A new cloth for the billiard table has been obtained.
