BOXING

Last Night’s Tourney That the fistic art has lost none of its attraction in the Grey district was again shown by a large gathering at thf Town Hall last evening tor the tourney arranged by the sports organisation of the Marist Brothers’ School, and during J‘ nte J ? yg 1 Brother Tarcisius from the ring spoke words of co^ m X da nromoters the many contestants, the promoters and ’the patrons, “ Blackball Nelson Creek, Runanga, Ngahere and other localities had vied SSlilly with Greymouth votaries in making a most successful and enenjoyaole evening’s sport. The great majority of tne oouu> were excellent contests, and the boxers made it willing all the way. Vociferous applause rewarded their efforts. Messrs F. O Neill, N. K.ely and F. Bell as referees gave general satisfaction. . . The main bout was that of six rounds between George Bowman, Kunanga, 11.7 and Norman Ross,, Greymouth, 11.9. This was a scientific as well as hard-hitting display. Ross was the early aggressor, but Bowman was as willing as he, and towards the end the effect of his right cross giving him the advantage. Tney hit hard and cleanly, with infighting frequent. Mr. Bell’s award for the Runanga man was popular. The winner was challenged by P. Mountford (Blackball). ~ , , Certainly the most torrid contest was the three li-minute round affair between the most weignty pair to enter the ring, “Chappie" Mundy, Greymouth, 118, and Mel Ord (Nelson Creek? 10.10. This developed quickly into a slogging match, greatly exciting the crowd. Ord showed ability to give and take it, for Mundy certainlv got in early with solid punches, and after the Nelson Creek man showect up in the second round, Mundy in the third earned a decision that was popular, but the margin was not a big one. For a mere youth Mundy showed stamina, though the pair at the end of the second round were well and truly pumped.

M. Tuck (nelson Creek) by toughness and aggression, earned tne decision over T. Dunn (Greymouth) in an excellent oout, one of the most spectacular of the evening. Both lads ooxed admirably. W. Hamilton (Greymouth.) after a nervous sia± t , in his bout with J. Mountford' (Blackball) exhibited a snappy punch, but his opponent suffered a nose injury which cut short the contest. J. J*’mlay (Greymouth) did excellently to draw with the heavier V. Mountford (Blackball). L. Ward (Greymouth) and B. Campbell (Blackball) put up a pice showing, the former’s science prevailing. In the semi-finals for the trophy for competition in the 7.7 division, donated by Mr. H. Harker, Tuck defeated Dunn and Morgan defeated Porter, as Morgan had sustaineu an injury! to his hand, Tuck won v.te trophy by default. The proceeds were in aid of the sports equipment, and the gymnasium fund ot the Marist Brothers’ School. The results were are as follows: J. McGrath (Grey) 5.0 beat P. O’Farrell (Grey.) ' 5.0; L.
