MOSCOW MEETING
Foreign Ministers BRITAIN, U.S.A. AND RUSSIA LONDON, Oct. 18. Mr Eden (British Foreign Secretary) and Senator Cordell Hull (U.S. Secretary of State) have arrived in Moscow' for the conference with M. Molotov (Soviet Foreign Affairs Commissar). The British Chief of Staff to the Defence Minister, General Sir Hastings Ismay, and the assistant Undersecretary of State for- the Foreign Office, Mr William Strang, have also arrived at Moscow. The Moscow radio announced that M. Molotov and M. Litvinov met them .at the airfield. The -new United States Ambassador to Moscow, .Mr Averill Harriman, has also arrived. Senator Hull on arival at Moscow, said he felt particular satisfaction in visitino- the capital of a great country united with his own in a common cause. He was pleased to be able to return the visit M. Molotov made to the United States and he anticipated with great pleasure a conference with him and Mr Eden. Mr Eden said he was very happy to come to Moscow again to participate in a conference and be able to return M. Molotov’s visit of last year. NEW U.S. MOVE. TO CONCILIATE SOVIET. (Rec. 10.50.) NEW YORK, Oct. 18. The “New York Times’s” Cairo correspondent says: It was learned from a reliable diplomatic source that a special American Military Mission, headed by Major-General Dean, formerly of the General Staff, is being sent to Moscow. The American Military Attache in Moscow will be withdrawn, and his office will be closed down. This move is expected to please Russia, because it has been an open secret that a conflict has existed! between the American LendLease mission in Moscow on the one hand and the Military. Attache’s office on the other.' It is pointed out that the Lend-Lease mission considered its task was to facilitate shipments to Russia, and to ask no questions, while the Military Attache felt that this hampered his duties. Washington has now decided to eliminate the Military Attache’s office, and so to alleviate Russian suspicions that the United States wants to find out too much in
