lOur Own Corresoonden<..j Kumara citizens assembled in force on Thursday evening at the Memorial Hall and extended a very cordial welcome home to members of the N.Z. E.F. on furlough. The hall was decorated by. the Ladies’ Committee with flags and evergreens, and the evening was in the nature of a grand ball, with musical items. The Mayor (Mr A. B. Spiers) welcomed the soldiers present, Sgt. J. R. Roberts, Pte. J. Gardiner, Sapper J. Tinnetti, Tpr. P. Neame, Spr. W. J. Kennedy, Pte. A. Chinn, Pte. Charters, and Sgt. H. Webster, and regretted that it had not been convenient for several others to attend. He wished them a’ pleasant furlough. Mr. A. Birss (President of the R.S.A.) and Mr. Fred Rudkin (Home Guard) expressed pleasure at welcoming the men back after their experiences in the Middle East, where the achievements of the New Zealanders had been crowned with glory. Sergt. J. R. Roberts, on behalf of’ the returned men, thanked all for their good wishes, and Kumcra people for their cordial welcome home. Items included songs by Mrs. W. J. McNabb and Misses Betty Sinchair and Marjorie - Stewart, an Irish jig by Miss Fay Calder, and a musical trio ‘by Messrs Colin Goad (violin), Frank Richardson (guitar) and Ivan May (accordeon). The accompanists were Mesdames F. W. Wise and V. Chapman and Miss Doris Hamer. Music for dancing was supplied by the Caledonian Orchestra, Hokitika, while Messrs C. Haines and G. Hunt, carried out the duties of M.C. Extras were playpd by Messrs C. Goad and G. Ellev. An excellent supper was provided bv the Ladies’ Committee.
