BRUNNER NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent)

A black-out trial was held in the Brunner Borough on Monday evening. The warning was received from Christchurch at 6.30 p.m. and at 6.32 p.m. all stations had been warned. As the result of some misunderstanding at Wallsend Mine, the mine whistle was not sounded until 6.41, eleven minutes after receipt of the warning and the mine lights were also visible during this period. With this exception, the District Lighting Controller. Air. A. E. Davenport, stated that the black-out was almost perfect, particular credit being given to Stillwater. Constable McQuarrie expressed complete satisfaction \vith the Law and Order Unit, over which he exercises a very efficient and tactful control. Dr. Kent expressed his regret that thp “casualties” and stretcher squads did not come up to full muster, but it could hardly be expected that people would turn out for first aid training in the heavy rain which was falling at the’ time. A complete inspection of the district was made bv the Mavor (Mr. J. Smeaton), the District E.P.S. Controller (Mr. G. R. Harker, the Deputy District Controller (Mr. W. F. Harley) the District Lighting Controller (Mr. A. E. Davenoort) and Constable McQuarrie. the E.P.S. has been depleted by the transference of active members to the Home Guard. From a public utility point of view, the services of these men have been entirely lost
