DUFF COOPER SPEAKS

1 The unfortunate Duff Cooper has often said things which more intelligent Tories would rather have kept unsaid. In a speech recently he assured his London listeners that the time was not too far off “when the Conservative Party must bring their great regime into operation again.” Mr Duff Cooper w.as frank enough about this “great regime.” “We will have to perform an important task,” he said, “in discouraging wild hopes. ... It is not likely that on the morrow of this war things are going to be better than they were before. ... I would not like to pledge ourselves to great reforms in every direction.”

Of course. Duff Cooper, as always, is quite light. Things will certainly not be better, but much worse than they ever were if, after ths war. “the Conservative Party brings its great regime into/ operation again.” —Tribune.
