PLAYING FIELDS OF RUSSIA

The sustained valour of the Russian people can derive only from complete moral and physical fitness. This was not bestowed upon them by an act of Providence, nor is it just a Russian characteristic. Behind it lie years of planning and untiring work, with the one aim of training the nation. Future generations of Russians may well adapt Wellington's words: “The war was won. on the 10,000 playing fields, in the 3500 gymnasiums, which the Soviet Union built between 1921 and 1941.” —Willy W. Meisl in “Free Europe,” London.
