Mr G. H. McLean, District Traffic Manager of Railways, Christchurch, is at present visiting Greymouth.
Sir Donald McGavin has been appointed a member of the Medical Council under the Medical Practitioners Act, according to a Gazette notice last night.
Nurse A. Stedman, of the Massage Department of the Grey Hospital, has left to take up war service in Auckland. She was farewelled at the Greymouth railway station last Tuesday by a large gathering of sisters and nurses.
Mr H. L. Harker. Grand President of the United Ancient Order of Druids, north Island Jurisdiction, who has been visiting lodges in the Greymouth district, left yesterday for Hokitika and later in the week will proceed to Christchurch and Wellington.
The death occurred at Hokitika yesterday of Mr. Hugh O’Donnell, at the age of 87 years. A native of County Tyrone, Ireland, he resided in Brunner for sixty years, and for the last six years of his life, lived in Hokitika. He is survived bv his widow, Mrs.' Mary O’Donnell, three daughters. Mrs. Satherley (Taumaranu), Mrs. Pitcher’ (Wellington), Mrs. O’Rourke (Hokitika), and one son. Alphonsus (Roa).

In honour of her approaching marriage, Miss G. N. Lower w.as the guest at a kitchen gift evening at the home of Mrs W. Braithwaite; Marlborough Street on Wednesday evening, tendered by St. Paul’s Young Women’s Guild, of which she is the Secretary. The good wishes of members were conveyed to Miss Lower by Mrs R. Pepperell (Vice-Presid-ent), in handing her a large number of gifts on behalf of members present. Rev. E. S. Hoddinott conducted an enjoyable programme. •
The following appointments and promotions of officers In the New Zealand Military Forces are gazetted: Major (Acting-Colonel) H. E. Fernyhough, Royal Artillery Command, New Zealand Staff College, is granted the temporary rank of Colonel; Temp. Lt.-Colonel P. V. Graves, Assistant Director of Medical Services, is appointed Colonel on the New Zealand Temporary Staff; Lt.-Colonel C. R. G. Bassett, V.C., N.Z. Corps of Signals', is appointed to the command of Northern District Signals; Lt.Colonel C. N. Newman, D. 5.0., is appointed Commander of the Artillery, Northern Military District. The Confirmation of the appointment of Colonel C. W. Salmon, D.C.M., in tne rank of Staff Colonel, Second N.Z.E.E. in the Pacific, and of Lt.-Colonel H. A. Jones, N.Z., Engineers, also ’is gazetted. -
