REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) REEFTON, May 20. Mr and Mrs W. Baird of Greymouth, are on a visit to Reetton as the guests of Mr Tom Baird. At the weekly card evening, conducted by the Fire Brigade, the winners of prizes were: Mrs Bissn (ladies), and Mr G. Dollan (gents). Lucky Chocolates, Mr Hardy. The annual meeting of the Inangahua Silver Band was held in the Band Room, when the President, Mr V. Newcombe occupied the chair. There weie 13 members present. The President. in his opening remarks, congratulated the Band on carrying on under adverse conditions throughout the year. The annual report stated that the membership had declined during the year, until it became impossible to carry out engagements. This was brought about by the bandsmen being called to the forces. No less than nine members were at present serving, while Lieut. R. Baird had paid the supreme sacrifice during the year. The Band recorded the death of a life member. Mr James Lawn. Practices were reduced to once monthly for the first time since the Band’s inception. A visit from the R.N-.Z.A.F. Band had stimulated interest in band work. The Band Hah and instruments were reported to be in good condition. The report and balance-sheet showing a credit balance, were read and adopted. A general discussion on the advisability of electing the officers of the Band, or .appointing a committee to administer the Band’s affairs took place, it being finally decided to proceed with the election, which resulted as follows:—President, Mr V. Newcombe: Patron, Mr E. Nicholson; Band Master. Mr L. Robinson; De-puty-Master, Mr E. Eager; Treasurer, Mr O G. Reid (pro tern); Secretary, Mr E. T. Baird (pro tern); Conductor. Mr E. Goodall; Band Sergeant, Mr E Elliston; Corporal, Mr J. Cohen; Lance Corporals, Messrs J. Eager and Mr D. Robertson; Librarian Mr M. Nicholls; Drum Major, Mr’T. Baird; Vice-Presidents, Messrs C. J’. Lawn, F. Lynch, D. W. Robertson, S. Newcombe. W. Harvey C. Cleaver, M. S. O’Malley, A. Butler, Committee, the Officers of the Band. It was resolved to hold two practices a month in the future, on Wednesday night and Sunday morning, as the Band is losing three more players to the forces shortly, the Conductor asked the members to attend regularly and keep the Band together. It was decided to write to the Council asking that the broom growing in the vicinity of the hall be removed. A vote of thanks to the chair con-

eluded the meeting. The Armed Forces Appeal Board sat in Reefton on Wednesday. The following appeals were adiouined sinp. die:—;Bert Sotneryille Neiper, trucker; Paul Brazil, miner (J. J. Nicholls); Gordon James Archer, mining timber cutter (self); George Joseph Tibbles, dredgemaster (self); Douglas Arthur Reid, carrier (Director); Colin Denis Robertson, truck driver (Reid’s Transport); Robert Hector McNeil, truck driver (Reid’s Transport); Reginald Oswald Bolitho, farmer (Mr H. Bolitho and self). Other appeals were dealt with as follows:—John Herd Mulligan, carpenter (Banks and Party), extended release granted; Bert lan Cummings, transport operator (self), held over; Phillip Newton Kerr, truck driver (B. Cummings), held over; Gordon Bel'gium Harris, farmer (self), held over; William Thomas Hempseed storekeepei’ (Hempseed Eros., and self), held over; Francis Lawry, driver (Reefton Volunteer Fire Brigade), dismissed; Reginald Ernest Bannon (Mrs E. Bannon), release from camp granted.
