(Our Own Corrcsponuenr Mr and Mrs Mason, of Christchurch are visitors to Millerton at i PI Hon. t W. H. Mclntyre has returned after visiting Wellington. Last week the Patriotic Comnut- , tee entertained Signalman S. Peggie while on leave, there being a large attendance. Mr T. Porter, chairman of the committee, presented Sgmn. Peggie with a wallet of notes, on behalf of the committee and the public. The recipient suitably replied A Monte Carlo waltz was won' by Mrs L. Plummer and Mrs A Morgan. Mrs J. .Boswell' supplied the music and Mr G. Plummer was M C Members of. the Miners’ Union Executive and the mine officials met at Millerton recently to finalise the contract trucking agreement. The mine continues to work five days weekly. ■ It was idle on March 12 with the horse drivers refusing to work the horses in the Mine Creek Mine, which- they maintained were in a filthy condition. A special Union meeting was held and after a lengthy discussion the meeting instructed the president and- secretary, with two of the horse drivers to inter-
view the management with proposals, and a satisfactory settlement was reached, work being resumed on Monday last. Adverse weather prevented the local bowlers visiting Runanga on Sunday last, as it did the previous Sunday a party visiting Greymouth. In the presence of a very large assemblage recently the local swimming baths were opened. Mr R. .Jack, president of the newly appointed Recreation Board welcomed all. Mr J. Ward, chairman of the Buller County Council said he hoped the bath was only a forerunner to other amenities which he claimed should be at the disposal bf people in isolated places. Hon. W. H. Mc-
Intyre recalled the improvements here since 35 years ago, such as reading, .but baths were long overdue. The credit for them largely was due to Hon. P. C. Webb. Mr J. Robertson, Mayor of Westport, said the baths were a perfect job, and much better than those of Westport. Mr C. Schadick, County Engineer, thanked all who had helped in completing the baths; especially the Ministers of Mines and Education, Westport Coal Coy. directorate, Physical Fitness Committee, Mr T. Douglas, County Councillors and County workmen, and Millerton public. He hoped that the public would look after their property and
that in the years to come one might visit Millerton and find the baths looking as they did at present. Mr Keesing, of Westport, said the baths were a beautifully finished job and could compare favourably with any in the country. The people in a few years would see the benefits of swimming for their children. He did not believe that what good enough for the parents was good enough for the children. Mr Webb said his ambition was to better the workers’ living standard. Such amenities should be available for all, with a preference for isolated communities. He looked for the day when the great improvements already in mining localities would be still greater. Millerton owed Mr Schadick much thanks for his interest in the physical fitness movement. He then declared the baths open amid applause. The chairman thanked Messrs Keesing and Woodward and the Westport Swimming Club members for their attendance. The Westport swimmers then gave an excellent exhibition Which all present appreciated. Hon. P. C. Webb later met deputations.
