FOOD RESTRICTIONS

More in Australia

MELBOURNE. March 23. Australians would have to accept regimentation of their food supplies, because the food front might well be the most important of the United Nations’ war fronts, for the remainder of the struggle. This warning 'has been given by the Minister of Supply (Mr Beasley) who as well as foreshadowing further controls over consumption of foodstuffs, said that Australia must step up production in order to honour its obligation to feed the people of Britain and other Allied nations and countries won back from the enemy. Mr Beasley made the statement following a meeting of the Food Council. Other announcements included: No rice for civilians this year because of the urgent demands of New Guinea natives and the Army. Extra canned fruit and chocolate civilian consumption. A survey of butter prices, wages and manpower in the dairying industry, will be made. The Food Council has approved a “Grow More Vegetables” campaign, financed by the Commonwealth.
