Compulsory Service

(Rec. 10.20.) LONDON, Feb. 16. The Vichy radio says that the Cabinet, after hearing a statement from M. Laval has decided to create a compulsory labour service in! the agriculture and workshops industries of France for men aged twenty-three to twenty-five years. The duration of service is to bo two years. The announcer said (hat this measure is necessitated by Hie needs of French economy, and the Government’s concern about Hie inequality under which Hie burden is being borne at present bv ihg working people, instead of by all Frenchmen irrespective of their social status. The British United Press comments: “The new measure is clearly related to a Gorman demand for manpower as much ns French industrial output and agriculture produce is aiding the German war effort.”
