U.S.A. coal strikers
Ordered to Resume THEY ASK STATE CONTROL. (Rec. 10.5.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 President Roosevelt has directed that all of the striking Anthracite coalminers shall return to work immediately. He intimated that if they failed to comply with the direction within forty-eight hours, the Government would take the necessary steps to protect the security of the nation against the strike, which was doing serious injury to the war effort. Meanwhile, five thousand miners are still idle. One union official declared that the mgn will not work under the Army, and they will not work under Mr John L. Lewis, but they are willing that the Government should take over the management of the mines for the duration of the war. The men feel that if the Government does this, and it thoroughly investigates the miners’ conditions, they will get a square deal. The miners are demanding increased pav of two dollars a dav. and the cancellation of a fifty cents per month increase made in their union dues.
