FURNITURE MAKING
New Restrictions in N.Z. SHORTAGE OF MATERIALS AND LABOUR. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 21. A Household Furniture Manufacture Control Notice was gazetted last evening enforcing a standard specification’for the simplification of furniture. The Minister of Supply, Hon. D G Sullivan, said that a shortage of supplies and of manpower within the industry had made this action necessary. The specification prohibits the manufacture of non-essen-tial items that are listed, including plant stands, standard lamps, cutlerv cabinets, cocktail cabinets, glass* fronted book-cases, cupboards, etc. Occasional tables and tea wagons are required to conform to maximum dimensions stipulated in the specification. which satisfy service considerations, whil avoiding an undue deman on materials and manpower, and without unduly restricting the design. The’ number of pieces in a bedroom suite is I’mited to four or five, according to whether twinbeds or double beds are used. Maximum d'mensional requirements are also established for duchess chests, wardrobes, bedsteads and tallboys. The number of drawers and the size of rnwrors is also restricted. Dining room suites are limited to six pieces, which are to be manufactured within maximum d'mensional requirements as laid down for sideboards, tables' settees and chairs. Furniture used in hospitals or similar institutions. or for such special purposes as may be approved by the Factory Conti oiler, is exempt from the provisions.
