LARGE JAP SHIP

Sunk by Bombs RABAUL ALSO ATTACKED. (Special to N.Z. Press Assn.) (Rec. 9.45) SYDNEY, Jan. 19. New gains at Sanananda Point and the sinking of an eight-thousand-ton Japanese merchantman in the Bismarck Sea, north of New Ireland, were reported to-day in General MacArthur’s communique. The vessel was attacked by Allied heavy bombers north of New Ireland. She received two direct hits. She burst, into flames and sank within eight minutes. Liberator bombers made further attacks on the Japanese shipping concentration at Ralj'aul but the enemy’s searchlight glare prevented observation of the results. Allied air offensives on Mondaj’ were on the recent, broad scale, covering several enemy bases.
