Rev. Brother Stephen left for Auckland yesterday. Mrs E. O’Neill left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr J. K. Bassett has returned from Christchurch. Mrs D. A. Arthur Cook, M.L.C., has been selected by vote as the New Zealand delegate to a conference of lepresentatives of trade unions throughout the British Commonwealth, whichi s to be held in London on April 12. The honorary degree of Doctor of Science in the University of NewZealand was conferred by the University Senate on Dr Alexander Craig• Aitken, M.A. <N.Z.), D.Sc. <_Edin), F.R.S. The granting of this degree is restricted to exceptional rpcommendations, and only a few awards have been made. Dr Aitken attended Otago University and is now Lecturer in Statistics and Mathematical Economics at Edinburgh University. He is well known for his remarkable mathematical capabilities, being considered by authorities as one of the most gifted mathematicians in the world. —P.A.
The death of Mr James Steele occurred at Greymouth on Monday evening. He w’as aged 59 years. Mr Steele had been ill for some time. Born at Denniston, he went to Duncilie 36 years ago and was employed at the State mines. He was wellknown as an athlete and wrestler, and a Rugby player. He is survived by his mother, Mrs W. Armstrong, six brothers, Hugh, Charles, George, William and Thomas, all of Dunollie. and Jack Steele of Preston Road. Greymouth, and one sister, Mrs Jacobson, of Kelson. The funeral will be held at the Karoro Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
