FATAL ARMY ACCIDENT
ONE KILLED, ANOTHER INJURED. MARLBOROUGH EXPLOSION. P.A. / BLENHEIM. October 7. An n.c.o 1 . was fatally injured and an officer was seriously wounded by an accidental explosion. The victims were:— Killed: Sergeant James Reginald Pepper, aged 20; whose next-of-kin are. Mr. ajjd Mrs Pepper, of Christchurch.
Injured: Second Lieutenant John Graham Cookson, of Dunedin. Sergeant Pepper and Second Lieutenant Cookson were .engaged -in preparins an explosive charge for the purposes of a demonstration to a party of troops. Thevi were alone at the time. It is not known exactly what happened to cause the detonator to explode.. Both men received extensive internal . injuries from which Pepper expired a few hours later. .T’ : <J ,
Cookson was removed to the Waitau Hospital, where his condition is reported as satisfactory., A civil inquest was adjourned after evidence of .identification had been -given. An Army Board of inquiry was held this afternoon.
