TRANSPORT CONTROL

POLICY COMMTTEES. At a meeting of representatives of the Greymouth, Runanga and Brunner Boroughs and the Grey County Counc ; l yesterday afternoon Messrs J. B. Kent and J. Mulcare were nominated as members of a Goods Transport Policy Committee which is to be set up in the Grey district. The nominations are to be forwarded to the Minister of Transport. These policy committees are to be set up m each transport control district. “The main function of each committee,” it is stated, “will be to advise the Minister of Transport in connection with the establishment of priorities in goods -to be carried by road transport., and'perhaps the prohibition of certain classes of unessential freights. As time goes on the shortage of commercial tyres will become more acute, and it may be necessary in . the public interest to restrict goods traffic to what available trucks can handle.” Mr. Kent presided at the meeting, and there were also present: Messrs H. F. Denton (Greymouth Town Clerk, who convened the meeting), H. Herring (Grevmouth Borough), E. W. Kennedy. J.'L. Luff (Runanga Borough), J. Smeaton (Brunner Borough). J. Mulcare (Grey County), and J. W. Greenhll (Goods Transport Control Committee). •Mr Greenhill gave a brief address on the function of the Goods Transport Control Committee. Mr. Mulcare said that he thought the general public should be represented as well as the operators on the control committees. The farmers’ members of the committee had no say when they attended meetings. , Mr. Smeaton said that he. viewed these various control bodies with some suspicion. The E.P.S. committees save many instances of bungling. There was nothing but inefficiency from one end of the countrv to the other. . Mr. Herring opposed the appomtment of too many committees and boards, stating, that present . goods transport committees were capable of dealing with the problems that arose. It was finally deejded that Mr. Kent be nominated for the boroughs and Mr. Mulcare for the counties.
