(Our Own Correspondents The Mayor, Mr E. W. Kennedy, presided at last evening’s meeting of the Runanga Borough Council, and th® following Councillors were also pre* sent: Councillors S. A. O’Neil, C. Barrow, A. Spark, A. Auld and J. Lull. The Main Highways Board advised that the estimates for the year included a subsidy of £3O on the £3 to £1 basis for the upkeep of the section in the main highway of the town. Acknowledging a letter from the Council regarding the Gymnasium Hall, the Under-Secretarv of Mines (Mr C. H. Benny) wrote that the Club was formed in 1911, the Department granting a subsidy Df £1 for £1 to build a. hall, one of the conditions being that the Department appoint one trustee, and that the hall be set aside one night each week for ambulance classes or educational purposes. The trustee appointed was the late Mr Geo Millar. The Club continued until 1918, when it fell through. The control of the hall was then vested in the Council./ In 1919, the Department granted a request from the Council to partition a portion of the hall fon Council chambers and offered part control of the building subject to conditions to fit up rooms for technical, ambulance, mining and other classes. The work to fit the rooms was carried out by the Department_at an estimated cost of £l9l 10s. It was resolved at a public meeting that the Council take over the Club’s interest in the building with outstanding liabilities. amounting to £33 10s. Gd. By' agreement dated August 27. 1927, control of the building was vested in the Band Committee for five .years. Thf? committee taking oyer-the liabilities of £33 10s 6d. In liouidation of this the band paid £5. arid no .further payments 1 have been Kbade. Following the formation of a 'new .Gymnastic Club in 1928. it was agreed to transfer control from the Eand to the Club, £172,12s 8d was expended on repairs. The Club agreed, it is understood. to keep the building in repair following this expenditure. A further report Was bein# obtained, and the
question will be further dealt with. The Council had already advised the Department of its inability to provide one-third of the cost of repairing the building. In reference to the erection of ’bus shelters it was decided to advise -the Department of Mines that shelters were proposed at the corner of Seddon Street and the Seven-mile Road, corner of Ward Street and Hall Jones Street, corner of Beute Street and McDougall Avenue, and corner of Pitt Street and Seven-mile Road. The size of each shelter would be 12ft. x 7ft. Messrs H? Boote, B. Smith and A. Houghton wrote regard--ing flooding of their properties. A letter on the same subject was received from Mr Mears. On the motion ot Crs. Luff and Barrow, it was decided to go into the matter, and rectify the nuisance caused to the properties concerned. The Grey Harbour Board advised that of a grant of £2OO to the Patriotic Fund, £lB 7s had been paid to the Provincial Secretary as part of the Runanga quota. The foreman reported that 52 loads of, gravel had been carted. Repairs had been carried out to the main highway. The grader worked on four days. Six 12-inch and six 24-inch concrete pipes had been made. Ten 24-inch pipes had been provided for the drain at the new State, houses, replacing the 15-incH pipes provided by the Department. A leak in the water mains had been repaired. Th.e intake at the dam had been cleaned, and' the valves opened. Concreting the footpath at the Post Office had been completed. There are at present three men employed on tiie Domain and two in the Borough --Tiie report was received as satisfactory. _ Accounts totalling £27 Is were passed for payments The Mayor reported that the bridge in Ward Street would be completed as soon as possible On tiie motion of Crs. O’Neil and Sparks, it -was decided that the riibbisii collection , scheme brought forward by Cr. Auld last year be intensified.—Carried, ■ Cr. O’Neil suggested that the .Council should visit the water-works, H P said that the dam had deteriorated, and would cost anything up to £2,000 to fix if hot attended .to quickly. Cr. Luff supported this view, and it was decided to visit the head works on Sunday morning, < ' .
