AMUSEMENTS

Ofiera House Finally To-night: “Frisco Lil” and “A Tragedy at Midnight.” Next Attraction (commences to-morrow, Friday): “You’ll Never Get Rich.” “YOU’LL NEVER GET RICH” The much-discussed, long-awaited new Fred Astaire musical “You’ll Never-Get Rich”, commencing at the Opera House to-morrow (Friday), has been hailed as the most spectacular musical extravaganza ever filmed in Hollywood. It brims over with laughter and gaiety and lovely girls against the background of Cole Porter’s tuneful new lyrics. And it provides the nimble-footed Fred Astaire witli the best partner he’s ever had—the beautiful, vivacious, much publicised Miss Rita Hayworth. Rita’s position as' Astaire’s dancing and romancing partner has been called, by both critics and fans, as an example of plain, commonsense, albeit “inspired” casting. Supporting the principals in “You’ll Never Get Rich”, whch has a delightful and topical story, are such prominent screen personalities as Robert Benchley, J'ohn Hubbard, Frieda Inescort, Osa Massen and a host, of other comedy and character players. As .well, there is a dazzling chorus of ninety-eight beauties, hand picked by Bob Alton himself, famous dance director of the film. Porter’s tunes, written exclusively for the film of course, will set the whole country whistling and humming. They include “So Near and Yet So Far,” “Dream Dancing,” “Since I Kissed My Baby Good-bye,” “The Wedding Cake Walk,” “Shootin’ in the Works for Uncle Sam” and “The Boogie Barcarolle.” Regent Theatre Finally To-night: “Two Faced Woman,” starrina Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. Commencing Friday: “Shadow of the Thin Man.” starring the now famous “Thin Man” Family—William Powell. Myrna Loy, Dick Hall and Asta. The “Thin Man’” is on the loose again, which means that WilliamPowell and Myrna Loy have once again assumed their famous characterisations as Nick and Nora Charles, with Nick, J'r., and Asta rounding out the noted detective’s family in' “Shadow of the Thin Man,” a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture. It’s a treat any time this film team get together,' but particularly so in a “Thin Man” story, which balances the slaphappy domestic life j of the Charles family with a mur- I der mystery. This time, Detective Charles faces one of his most difficult sleuthing problems, dealing with no less than three ebrpses. Nora, as usual, tries to be .the helpful little woman and, as usual, adds only to Nick’s (roubles in a score of amusing situations. Nick, Jr., now* walking and talking, proves to be a young tyrant and Asta has added a score of new tricks to those which have delighted audiences in the past. The outstanding director-producer team of Maj. W. S. Van Dyke 11. and Hunt Stromberg, responsible for all the “Thin Man” films, brings the new picture to the screen. Associate programme includes a Pete Smith “Cuban Rhythm,” “Merchant Seamen,” a really outstanding short on this branch of the fighting services; “Profit from Paper,” is an excellent N.Z.-made film dealing with the reclamation of waste paper; Rathe- Gazette, and also latest Overseas News. PUBLIC LECTURE A lecture on V.D. which is occupying the minds of everyone at the present time wll be given by a local doctor to-night (Thursday), at 8.15 in Wesley Hall, and should be heard by everyone. . -
