Mr Fred Rudkin, who for the past three weeks has been undergoing military instruction, returned to Kumara on Saturday. Mrs Geo McEnanev and Miss Margaret McEnaney left for Christchurch last Saturday. Miss J. G. Watson left for Christchurch by Tuesday's express. Mr W. Chamberlain suffered injury to his foot on Monday, when his leg was crushed by a. log. * He was later taken to the Westland Hospital. The Deputy Mayor (Cr J. Murphy) presided at the usual meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, there be ing also present Crs. R. N. May; G. Elley, ,B. Becker, W. J. McNabb ano W. Lawrence. The Waikato Hospital Board wrote with reference to hospital taxation, and it was resolved, that no action be taken in the meantime. Mr J. O’Brien forwarded the decision of the Acting-Minister of Customs regarding the remission of sales tax on water pipes for the borough Water'’ scheme. The Director of National Service wrote for comments as to the necessity of lectures’ and stretcher training for E.P.S. members. • A leter was received from Rev. Father Healy requesting that a culvert be constructed outside the presbytery gate, and it was resolved that a reply be sent stating that the work referred to would be completed as soon as possible. The Fire Brigade wrote for permission to erect a fence at each end of the training track, and this was granted subject to the ..condition that it be erected at their own risk. Westland Hospital Board wrote re an emergency hospital. The matter was 'eft over to be dealt with at an E.P.S. meeting. A letter was received from the Main Highways Board approving estimates for the current year. Outstanding rates were considered and it was resolved that notices be sent stating the intention of the council to sue for any rates outstanding at October 15, 1942. Cr. G. Hunt was granted a further three months’ leave of absence. The chairman of the Public Works Committee, reported on work for the month. Resolved that an inspection by all councillors be made on Sunday afternoon. Accounts amounting to £136 10s 9d were passed for payment.
