Jefferies, of Little Wanganui, is spending a few days with relatives in Westport. Dvr. W. E. C- Staples, of Waimangaroa, returned to camp on Tuesday. Pte. W. J. Parry arrived home yesterday, on leave after duty overseas. Sgt. R. (Bob) Harder, R.N.Z.A.F.. lias advised friends in Westport that lie has gained his Wings at an Air Force station in Canada, thus receiving the rank of Sergeant Pilot. A sitting of the Armed Forces Alpeal Board was held on Tuesday, Messrs W. Meldrum (chairman), P. J. McLean, A. J. Panther and C. F. Shapcott (secretary) being on the bench. The following cases were dealt with: A. Slaven, lorrv-driver, appealed for by D. J. Williams and Co. Mr Hay gave evidence that Slaven was employed in delivering bread and, other goods at Denniston, li. was impossible to obtain anyone io replace Slaven. —Adiourned sine die. A. A. Pain cordial manufacturer, appealed for by T. M. Pain on the grounds of undue hardship. —Adjourned for three months. A. W. Hodgson, ajccoun'cajnt, -appealed for by Bailie and Co. Evidence was given that the services of Hodgson were indispensable and it was impossible to obtain a replacement and he is at present also managing the business. The manager is at present living in Nelson owing to ill health. —Adjourned sine die. Felix M. Mitchell, sawmiller, appealed for by F. T. Mitchell. —Adjourned sine die. William Powell, gas stoker, appealed for by the Westport Borough Council. Mr 'Bevan, manager of the Gas Department, gave evidence that four stokers were employed and only fit men were suitable for the work. It was impossible to get a replacement. —Adjourned sine die. John J. Brown, driver, appealed for by Craddock s Transport, Ltd. Mr Craddock gave evidence that Brown is employed m cream cartage for the dairy factory and his services were essential, especially as he' was called up and was not appealing. —Adjourned sine die. N. J. Daly, draper, appealed on his own behalf with J. W. Fair. Ltd. as co-appellant. The appeal was adjourned pending the result of an application for re-boarding. E. G. Watt (grocer), no appearance. — Struck out. An appeal by Ryan and Sons for Charles J. Ryan, was withdrawn. A. B. Daily, porter, appealed for by the Buller Hospital Board. The secretary gave evidence that Daily was being trained in X-ray work, but was not yet fully trained, and was generally a very useful man to the board. —Adjourned sine die. William Boyd, contractor, appealed on his own behalf on the grounds of undue hardship, and gave evidence that he was the only carrier at Denniston. He had a contract to cart < oal to the householders at Denniston, besides various other essential ; work.—Adjourned sine die. A. J. I Gilmour, 'general carrier, appealed on his own behalf and the appeal was supported by the Seddonvilffi Miners’ Union. Gilmour said that he- was tlie only carrier at Seddonville and did all the carting for the ■ mines and ether essential cartage.-— , Adjourned sine die. Andrew Nicholls, truck driver, appealed for by Mrs C. Nicholls, with Small holme Motors ; Ltd., co-appellants. A. Smallholme gave evidence that Nicholls did all the carting of coal to householders in the district, and it was impossible to replace him. —Adjourned sine die. W. A. Gilmour, carpenter, appealed for by Smallholme Motors Ltd. A. Smallholme gave evidence that Gilmour resided at Seddonville and took men to and from there to an essential road job at Stockton. He could not be replaced.—Adjourned sine die. D. G. Johnson, cycle mechanic, appealed on his own behalf on the grounds cf undue hardship. Johnson gave evidence on his own behalf and stated that there were only three cycle repair shops in Westport. There was more work now than previously owing to shortage of petrol. The board thought the anpellant’s brother should be able to carry on the business. —Adjourned for three months for review. Jack Jose, boot repairer was appealed for by R. Jose on the grounds oi undue hardship. P. Jose gave evidence that the repairing trade was very busy. He was considerably behind with his work— . Adjourned sine die and to render Home Guard service. Edward John Venning, lorry-driver, and Arthur William Langton, leading mechanic, were appealed for by G'bbs’ Transport Ltd. W. K. Goodman gave ev>; dence that these men were essential for the business. —Adjourned sine die. J. R- Tippen. service car driver, appealed for b- H. J. Bradley. Bradley gave evidence that he had five vehicles with two drivers. Services were run between Stockton, Hector and Granity, carrying children Io school, miners to work and ordinary services.—Adjourned sine die. Peter George Ryan, baker, appealed for by Timothy Ryan, against, the board’s decision at previous sitting. Evidence was given by T. Ryan that it was impossible to get his bread out in time with any reduction of his staff. Mr Shapcott cross-exammed and

Atkin and Co. C. Atkin gave evidence that three linotype operators were essential to the business.—Adjourned sine die. J. P. Kilkenny, mechanic and fireman; J. W. Woodhead, shop assistant and fireman; T. M. Scanlon, storeman and fireman; E. R. Roonev, labourer and fireman; S. T. E. McKenzie, hairdresser and fireman; W. Jenkin, boot importer; J. H. Daily, labourer; H. L. Betteley, hotelkeeper, appealed for by the Westport Fire Board, adjourned for three months, came up for review. The Superintendent of the Brigade, J. A. Daily, gave evi- | dence that the effective strength of ' the brigade is thirteen, with 241 E.P.S. auxiliary members. —Sine dieadjournments 'were granted in all cases. J. H. Salt, C. M. Harris and J. U. Maher, secondary school teachers, appealed for by the Nelson Education Board. Mr H. J. Thornton, secretary of the board, gave- evidence that the board had now decided to ‘appeal for all male experienced teachers. —Adjourned sine die. An application from the- Stockton residents for the release of C. C. Saiids. school teacher, from camp, to enable the Stockton School to be re-opened. It was claimed that the present arrangements were unsatisfactory. The application was granted. The monthly meeting of the Ratepayers’ Association was held last 1 right in the Town Hall. Mr C. Atkin presided. A reply was received re tne closing of Domett Street to school children. The meeting ds- ; cussed the likelihood of power be- ; ing supplied to residents of Carter’s j and the Cape- Road. A mot.on was i carried that a letter be sent to the ; Borough Council to ask that in the 1 interests of economy the street lights be switched off on bright moonlight , nights; that the counc.l enforce the | by-law regarding noxious weeds, 1 especially gorse growth; and that the council be asked to enforce the rule of keeping to the left on the footpaths. The condition of the cemetery was discussed and it was decided that a letter be sent to the secretary of the Cemetery Board regarding the presence of cattle in the cemetery, which were causing damage and creating a nuisance. People r.ding bicycles on the footpaths were strongly condemned and a letter is to be sent to the Sergeant of Police asking for a firm stand to be taken. The annual meeting of the Buller Football Association was held in Westport. The following clubs were represented: Thistle (G. Orman and J. Riddell), Army (B. Pickering and J. Shaw), Bachelor (R. Watson), Waimangaroa (G. Richardson), also G. Bly th (secretajry). Election of officers resulted: President, G. Rich-; ardson; secretary, Mr J. Blyth; auditor, Mr C. Orman; committee, all club delegates. It was resolved I that two club delegates be entitled j to vote at all meetings. It w r as de- > cided that the D.C.L. Cup be con-1 eluded at the end of three rounds, with the remainder of the cups to be. J played on the knock-out system. It, was decided that the secretary write ■ the N.Z.F.A. and endeavour to secure i a number of rule books and referee 1 charts. Next week’s fixtures are as follows: D.C.L. Cup.—Thistle v.
