HEAVY R.A.F. RAIDS
ON INDUSTRIAL CITY
In Nor’-west Germany
RUGBY, August 18. The Air Ministry states: On Monday night our bombers attacked objectives in North-west Germany. Railways and the industrial centre or Osnabruck were the main tai get. The attack was over within an hour and a-half. during which time over 50,000 incendiaries and njan-y of the heaviest of bombs were dropped in and around the town. Many fires were started. Anti-aircraft lire was tierce, and enemy lighters were very active around the town and along the route. One Wellington bomber was attacked from behind over the sea on its wav home, but the rear gunner shot down the attacker. Another lighter attacked from the front and set one wing of the Wellington on lire, but the rush of wind blew it out, and the machine landed safely. Five of our bombers are missing from last night’s raids. Aircraft of the Bomber and Fighter Commands attacked airfields in enemy-occupied territory, on Tuesday morning.
A Spitlire squadron destroyed an HE I'ls, off the French coast, and damaged an HE 59. Both these machines are float-planes. They were accompanied bv six F.W.’s Two of our planes are missing.
Fighter Command Spitfires, on Tuesday afternoon, attacked enemy aircraft over a wide front, and made small-scale sweeps ranging from Le Havre to Dieppe. Abberville and Ostend. One of our aircraft is missing. One FW 190 was shot down m the Gris Nez-Calais area.
