MILITARY SERVICE AND CAREERS.

WELLINGTON. August 18. A survey undertaken bv vocational guidance 'officers throughout the North Island shows that a lar„e number of boys are leaving school and being drafted straight into mmtarv camps without taking up the careers for which they are best iitr ed, because they are approaching military age. Others, again, have been prevented from taking up suitable apprenticeship because of shortage ot materials in trades or because there are insufficient journeymen to allow additional apprentices under awards. N.Z. MEDICAL SERVICES IN MIDDLE EAST.

WELLINGTON. August 18. A high tribute to the work of the New Zealand Medical Services in the Middle East was paid in a cable to the Minister of Defence by General Frevberg who has just visited our General Hospital at Beirut in the Canal area and Helwan. following his personal experience of the greatskill and care at No. 1 General Hospital, while recovering from ... his wounds. ‘‘l feel 1 that at the present moment when there are so manv battle casualties in our hospitals, vou would be reassured to- know somethin 0, of the wonderful work of our medical services in looking after battle casualties.” said General Frevberg. “Our hospitals are excellently equipped, the skill of the doctors and nursin°staffs is of the highest standard, and all serious cases have special da' r and night nurses. The Director of the Medical Services reported that wounden arrived in excellent condition. due to quick evacuation, and a high standard of medical attention bv our field ambulances. A wonderful spirit of efficiency and devotion to duty was evident both in the hospitals and in the field, and the great work of the Medical Services received continual inspiration from the magnificent spirit of our wounded.”

HOME GUARD EXPENSES. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 17. Strong comment on the expenses which members of the Home Guard country units have to bear in fulfilling their obligations for training was made at a meeting of the Kairanga Countv Council, when a deputation from E Company (Longburn and Kairanga) sought financial assistance. The deputation said that when the required number of hours of training had not been nut in there was no capitation payable, and capitation was insufficient to meet expensses. The chairman said the guard were not being rightly treated by the Government. The Council decided to forward its views in regard to the amount of aid given the Home Guard in the form of a remit to the Counties’ Association, and also 1 to the Army authorities. GAS MASKS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. Civilian gas masksi will shortly be available for distribution in Christchurch. Within a month, if deliveries are up to schedule, Christchurch should receive 12,500 of these respirators, with further supplies dependent on the arrival of additional stocks of activated charcoal. THEFT AT FIRE. DUNEDIN, August 18. “The theft was most despicable. In some countries ’the guilty person would be shot,” commented the Magistrate. Mr. H. W. Bundle, in sentencing Roger Jack Wilton. 33. to ten month’s imprisonment for theft of articles valued at £8 12s 6d, during the big fire in High and Rattary 1 Streets in April. The Magistrate added that when people suffered misfortune and an individual took advantage of the confusion to. steal unprotected goods, the thief deserved no consideration. The police stated that the goods belonged to a guest at the Grand Hotel. On the night of the fire, when the hotel was threatened, a porter removed the goods to a doorway. They were missing when the owner returned. The goods were recovered yesterday, when the ac-. cused was seen wearing a stolen jacket.
