Captain Parkes said Worth.ngton was i called up for service while at Barrytown. A letter instructing him to resport for medical examination was sent to him in April, and another, which was registered, in June, which ]was returned “not. known.” Worthington. in .evidence, stated he had re- ' ceived no communication from the Army until he received the summons. ! He had been in Reefton Hospital. He had notified the Army authorities m Greymouth by telephone of his change of address to Inangahua Junction. He .had also made a special trip to urey- : mouth and interviewed the Army otlicer. He was told they _ would be I ready for him in a fortnight. He had heard nothing since. He was quite prepared to meet h s military , obligations. At no time had he tried to evade military service. The Magistrate said he was satisfied with the explanation and dismissed the case. .Mr M. B. Scully appeared for Worthington. M. M. Simpson, licensee of I Little Wanganui Hotel, was charged with selling Liquor after hours, bergt. I Holt said the case was the outcome of a drowning accident when a seaman had lost his life. Ihe licensee admitted serving a round of drinks to the men. The licensee was fined £2 and costs. Three men charged with being on licensed premises “after hours at Little Wanganui were each fined 5/_ and costs. L. M. O’Neill, licensee of the Star Hotel, Cape Foulwind, was charged witn selling liquor after hours on June 21 and lined £2 and costs. A charge of keeping the premises open for the sale of liquor was withdrawn. I our men found on licensed premises at Cape Foulwind after hours on June 21 were each fined 5/- and costs. (Three men found on licensed premises the Crown Hotel, Burnetts Face, lon July 5 were ®ach fined 5/- and costs. Kevin, meeting of the Nelson Education Board dealt with BuHer district .business as follows: Westport School Committee wrote asking .101 ■ mrant of £lOO towards costs of laying out new school grounds. Members pointed out that £16,000 had been spent on the new school. The Board had spent over £BOO from its own 1 funds for new furniture. It was felt that the committee should take steps to put the playing area in a proper condition. Cape' Foul wind Committee wrote for direction in action to be taken on letter from “Closer Relations to Russia Society. The Chairman pointed out that the question of producing for all schools a text-book on Russia was a question for the Education Department, as the I Education Board was purely an administrative body. The Board de'tided to advise the committee to that ’effect Westport North Committee wrote suggesting that a speciall c ass for backward children be. re-establish-ed at their school. On the recom'mendation of the Senior Inspectors the Board decided to hold over the application until the Departments 01-. ficer reported on the number of pupils that would be attending.
