S.I. TRANSPORT ZONING
BREAD, MILK AND GROCERIES. BEER QUESTION DISCUSSED
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH,. July 22. Preparations are being made here for the zoning of grocery deliveries, Mr. T. H, Langford (South Island Zoning Officer) said to-day. He intended to have the zoning schemes, for bread, milk and groceries put into operation as soon /is possible in South Island towns. He was trying to get information now from Christchurch grocers and storekeepers, and was preparing questionnaires for them. Returns would indicate the, extent of vehicle use in districts served, and of overlapping. Then, with the trades' co-operation and assistance, he would put the scheme into effect. 1 Mr. Langford was also invited to comment on statements by the North Island Zoning Officer, (Mr. Christie) on beer transport. “There is to-day,” Mr. Langford said, “an enormous wastage of both road and rail waggons and shipping space in the transport of alcohol. That should not be permitted for another day. If people are called on to take whatever milk and bread is zoned upon them, then, surely, alcohol should not have preferential treatment. There is no provision under the regulations for me as zoning officer to deal with beer transport. However, the Minister has power to declare it a commodity with which I can deal, and to Gazette commodities' other than those already listed in the regulations.”
