YESTERDAY’S GREYMOUTH SITTING

Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., presided , at a sitting of the Magistrate s 1 Court at Greymouth yesterday. - On charges brought by the Radio Inspector, P. & T. Department, Greymouth (Mr A. H. Sumner) the following persons were convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs (except where , otherwise stated) for operating un-. registered wireless receiving sets:— Joseph Kelly £l, Hugh Brown. Thomas McGuire, Prudence Phelan, James Edward McKeefry and Thomas Gardyne. UNREGISTERED DOG On the information of the Greymouth Borough Inspector (Mr H. Lane), George Wright was charged with being in possession of an unregistered dog on June 3. He ple?cled not guilty. « The Inspector said defendant had had a dog for about two years, and il. had notp'been registered in that time. On June 3 he had been requested to register the animal ana was again warned on June 17. However, defendant had taken no notice and it had not y.et been registered. Defendant said that the dog was not his. It had wandered into his place abou< ± s months ago and he had fixed it up. He could not register the dog as it was not his pro-, perty. He felt that the Borough should destroy the dog. f The Magistrate: You fixed the dog up and kept him ever since;-,, you appropriated him so you are undo.” a liability to register him. “I thought there was some way by which the Borough could get r’d of him,” said defendant. “I do not. want the dog.” The Inspector said that the Borough did not do that sort of thing. “You will be convicted and ordered to pay Court costs 10s only,” said the Magistrate. “I won’t inflict a line under the circumstances, but you must realise your responsibilities in the matter. If you don’t want the dog, get rid of it, but if you do want it, you will have to register it.”
