WEST COAST TEAM TO PLAY CANTERBURY The West Coast Rugby football team to play Canterbury at Rugby Park, Greymouth on Saturday, has been chosen by the Slection Committee (Messrs T. P. Ryan, T. McIntosh and G. Moore) as follows:-— Full-back: J. Gillan (Star-United . Three-quarters: C. Monk (Hoki.), J. Amberger (Hoki.), W. Roche (Army). Five-eighths: A. Lindbom (Cobden), E. Collins (Army). Half-back: M. Davidson (Hoki.). Forwards: R. Kirkwood (A), JFisher (A), R. Weiblitz (H), W. Blair (S-U), R. R. King (Cob.), A. Birchfield (Cob.), A. Smith (S-U), V 7. Croudis (Celtic). Emergencies: Backs, L. Stewart (Blaketown), H. de Freatus (A); forwards, G. Beardsley (Cob.), A. Kinder (Hoki.). Commenting on the above selection oui’ Hokitika correspondent says: Local football followers are pleased with the selection, especially that or Malcolm Davidson. While he is always ready to stand down to give the younger players a chance, his re-appearance nevertheless will prove he retains all his football brains. Davidson has applied for admission to the Royal Air Force. In civilian life he is employed in the well-known foundry of G. and D. Davidson, as an engineer, fitter and moulder, and will, follow his trade in the Air Force. Ron King and Davidson worked out many tactical movements when formerly playing together in the West Coast rep teams, and one can remember many of their tricks coming off and leaving their opponents open-mouthed. In his gamefe this season Davidson has proved he is right back to form. There have also been tactical moments in games when King and Davidson were on opposite sides, and when near the goal line a scrum was ordered, King generally allocated the task of watching Davidson himself. On one occasion Davidson essayed to go through King’s legs in a dive for a try! The combination will be good on Saturday.
