Hon. W. H. Mclntyre and J. H. Harkness, returned to Westport on Tuesday after attending the monthly meeting of Nelson Education Board. Patriotic Funds: Mr. J. M. Robertson, Chairman of Buller District Patriotic Committee, acknowledges 12s from Mr. and Mrs. James Ward; £1 4s from Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Turner; 6s, Jean Robertson; 6s, Mr. A. Taylor; 12s, M. C. Robertson; £l, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Currie; £3, Mayor, Councillors and Staff; 6s, Mr. P. Morgan; 18s, J. M. Robertson; 12s, T. A. H.; all for soldiers overseas. W.W.S.A.:

At a meeting of the W.W.S.A. held .in the Town Hall last evening, it was decided to decorate the Friendly Societies’ Hail for the dance being held on Friday. The programme for the dance is to be modern and old time. Mr. Fairbairn has consented to run the cards and the usual prizes will be given. The members are to provide two plates of cakes each. Ratepayers’ Association: Mr. T. Matthewson presided over a meeting of the Westport Ratepayers’ Association held in the Town Hall last evening. A letter is to be forwraded to the Westport Borough Council, requesting attention to be given to rubbish, etc., being cast about the streets from lorries conveying vegetables and fruit. It was resolved that the Council’s attention be drawn to the state of the public urinal in Brougham Street, in the vicinity of the railway station, and to request that same be disinfected and attention be given to increasing the pressure of the water spray. That a letter be sent to the Hospital Board, requesting the training of a female attendant to operate the X-ray plant in the case of female patients when being X-rayed. It was resolved that a letter be written to the Borough Council requesting that nil business be conducted in open council, particularly fn connection with the present agreement between the Westport Coal Company and the Council. It was decided to write the Borough Council suggesting that owing to blackout conditions all pedestrian safety crossings be painted white: also that a pedestrian safety crossing be provided in the vicinity of the Friendly Societies’ Hall, so as to enable safer access to the Town Hall for people when approaching same from the south. Education Board:

The following Buller business was deo.lt with at the meeting of the Nelson Education Board: —Denniston School Committee renewed its request for construction of air-raid shelters in the school grounds. The Secretary read a, letter from the Public Works engineer, Greymouth, stating that Denniston was not included in vulnerable areas, but if the school committee desired to construct shelters at the school the committee could submit plans through the Education Board, which if approved, would carry a grant of £1 for each child attending Denniston School, the work to be carried out by the School Committee. The Public Works Engineer. Greymouth, also submitted a report on shelter trenches produced to be erected at Westport North and South Schools, in which he disapproved of the plans proposed by the Nelson Education Board, contending that they should be constructed to hold 50 children in each shelter instead of 30 as now provided for. After dissension, the Board decided to adhere to its present plans. Westport Technical High School notified the Board that '!• was uriable to procure <a teacher for the cookery classes at Denniston High School. The Board was of the opinion that Denniston manual classes could be sent to Westport Technical High School fortnightly, as were the pupils from Millerton and Stockton Schools, and recommended that for the consideration of the Technical School Board. The Secretary reported that the election of Board members would take place on Wednesday, 15th. July. Nominations close on the 24th. June. Mr. J. H. Harkness is the retiring: member for the West Ward. The follow’ng teaching appointments were made for the Buller district: Secondary assistant, Denniston District Hie-h ‘School: John N.
