REEFTON NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent/. REEFTON, March 19. As from Monday last only one mail per day is dispatched to Greymouth, from the _ Reefton Post Office, and this closes at 7.50 a.m. Shortage of stall, brought about by war conditions. is responsible for this curtailment of mails but business people will be put to great inconvenience. It might be better to have the outward mail dispatched in the afternoon as it would then reach its destination early the following morning. However, people will have to put up with these difficulties during the war, as it is realised that a depleted staff cannot be expected to carry out the usual routine work of the Post Office. At a meeting of the committee of the Jockey Club last evening, tne following officials were appointed: — Executive committee, the president, vice-president, Messrs W. J. Barrv, R. Yellowlees. C. J. Willis; ground committee, the whole committee; judicial committee. Messrs C. H. Cleaver, F. Bonifacio, G. Murtha, Willis, Yellowlees; programme committee. president, vice-president, Messrs Willis and Gebbie; ticket committee, president and Mr Willis. It was decided that the first race at the autumn meeting start at 12.30 pan. and the last event at 5.10. A decision as to whether the win and place totalisator is to be conducted was left for the executive committee to decide after the closing of nominations. . _ . The distribution of apples in Reetton schools was commenced yesterday and this afternoon a further distribution took place. Needless to add the fruit was welcomed by the pupils. Sergeant J. Cutbush, son of Mr and Mrs F. Cutbush, of Reefton, who enlisted in England, in the N.Z. AntiTank Battery, and who was wounded in the Libyan campaign, and has been invalided home, . arrived in Reefton yesterday, when Corporal W. Andrew of the 2nd N.Z.E.F., son of Mr and Mrs J. D. Andrew, of Rotor kohu also returned. Both soldiers travelled via Nelson. Cpl. Andrew; who left the car at Rotokohu to go to his home, was sent a telegram of welcome by the County Chairman. Sgt. Cutbush was met at the railway station by Messrs W. B. Auld (County Clerk) ' representing the County Chairman and Council, J. B. Discacaiti (chairman of Reefton Patriotic Committee) and W. Gore Porter (president of Reefton R.S.A.) The party motored to. the Council Cham-
bers, where there was a goodly gathering, though short notice had prevented the organisation of a larger gathering. Messrs Auld, Discaciati and Gore Porter extended 'a most hearty welcome, trusting that Sgt. Cutbush would soon be fully restored, and able to take part in civilian life. They were pleased to see him looking so well, and were proud of the part he had played in the war. They were sure his parents felt pride and happiness in having him home again. / The R.S.A would be glad to afford him any assistance he might need. Apologies were received for absence from Messrs W. J. Humphries. P. Lord and A. Stanley. Sgt. Cutbush, who was received with acclamation, thanked Messrs 'Auld, Discaciati and Porter, and all present, for their kind re- 1 ception. He much appreciated the gathering of Reefton people to welcome him home and he felt very happy to be home again. He had met a number of Reefton boys overseas and they were well and proud of their home town. He thanked them for the welcome. The gathering concluded with “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Several other West Coast men who have been invalided home are to travel to their homes via Christchurch.
