SUPPORT FOR HOME GUARD

INVERCARGILL MEETING. P.A. INVERCARGILL, March 19. A meeting was held in the Civic Theatre to-night for the purpose of rousing the people to the seriousness of the present crisis facing New Zealand and of gaining recruits and support for the Home Guard. It was attended by about 700, including a good proportion of women. A motion was carried affirming that while, the danger of a Japanese invasion was recognised, there was no need for defeatism, and that such an invasion could be beaten off, provided every avialable weapon were prepared, and every available man trained. The motion also expressed the opinion that the public morale must be stiffened, and the Home Guard strengthened. Between £4OO andi £5OO was collected at the meeting to provide equipment for the Home Guard.
