(Our Own Correspondent/. WESTPORT, March 13. High Tides at Westport: Saturday, 14—8.19 a.m.; 8.47 p.m. Sunday, 15—9.5 a. nt.; 9.32 p.nt. Monday, 16—9.49 a.m.; 10.13 p.m. Tuesday, 17 —10.28 a.m; 1053 p.m. Ministerial : Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, arrived in Westport by ’plane, on Thursday from Wellington. Personal: Mr A. Woodward has been elected a member of the Westport JockeyClub. Mr J. Roberts, President of the New Zealand Labour Party, arrived from Nelson yesterday. Miss Pam Methven, a pupil of St. Mary’s College, has received word that after a recount of her University Entrance Examination marks, she has received a pass. Idle death occurred in Waikato Hospital, Hamilton on Thursday, of an old and highly esteemed resident of the Buller district, in the person of Nir Charles George Friend. Deceased was born at Kent, England on March 16, 1858, and came to Nelson in the shin “Eerglen” in 1871, learning_J.he butchery business there under W. J. Warren. He came to Westport in 1881 and worked lor Colvin and McWha, butchers and later at Waintangaroa and Granity on his own account, and for some time was occupied in goldmining in the Waintangaroa River. He was foreman for the Westport Coal Company for many years, and later for the Buller County Council. Deceased leaves his wife, nee Miss J. Plarris, of Addison’s Flat, five sons, Charles, Westport; George, Frankton Junction; Noble, Wellington; Ellis, Ohakune Junction and Ivor, Christchurch; also two daughters, Mrs W. Mason, New Brighton, and Mrs S. Todd, Waihi; also la grandsons. One son, William, died of war injuries in 1926. Three sons served in the 1914-18 war. Charles. George and William. The sympathy of the community is ex<tended to the bereaved in their sad loss. Women’s Branch N.2.L.P.:

The annual meeting of the Westport Women’s Branch of the N.Z. Labour Party was held on Sundaylast, there being a good attendance. Mrs T. Hansby presided. In her report, she stated that she was veryproud of the financial position of the branch; also those members who had done great work, and as a committee had excelled themselves. Reference was also made in respect of Mr R. Dobson for services rendered to the branch and it was decided to make a presentation on a suitable date. At the last annual meeting, Mrs I. Ryan was appointed delegate from the ibravaoh to the W.WI.S.A., who iby that committee has been elected as president, and as in other positions held, by her, she has done great work in hei’ undertakings. The balancesheet, as produced, was received as highly satisfactory, and it was moved and seconded by the vice-presid-ents that there be no election for officers, and those in office remain. This was carried by acclamation: — President, Mrs R. Hansby; Vice-Pre-sident, Mrs T. Davis; Secretary, Mrs S. Collins; Executive members, Mrs I. Ryan, Mrs H. Stephens, Mrs Ellison, Mrs Glen and Mrs McCulloch; Auditor, Mr T. Fowler, whose serf vices in auditing the books were appreciated. Mr T. Shaw was elected as additional auditor. The social committee is to remain as before. Mrs M. Collins, secretary, gave a report of the year’s activities, which had been curtailed on account of the war. However, what was done was a credit to all. Mrs McKinlay was extended best wishes for a speedy recovery to good health, so that she might go back as a member of the branch. Her help was wonderful. It was decided that a letter of appreciation be forwarded to her. It was moved and. seconded that minutes of last annual meeting be confirmed as read; also that the balance-sheet, be received an-d adopted as highly satisfactory. It was moved and seconded that £4O be transferred to the Post Office from the Commercial Bank. It was also moved and seconded that a letter be forwarded to Stockton Women’s Branch, congratulating them on the formation of same; and stating that if at any time they could help them they would only be too glad to-co-operate. Mrs S'. Collins was appoint-' ed to the conference as delegate. It was decided to vote £5 as an appreciation of hei’ secretaryship. Feeling reference was made in the passing of Mrs W. White, all members standing in silence as a mark of respect. During the year donations were made to the following: Crippled Children’s Society, St. John Ambulance Fund, C. Baldwin’s Appeal Fund, Children’s Health Camp. Committee, Cup to Boy’s Boxing Association, Copies of “Standard’’ to the boys overseas with , fighting forces. The financial statement was as follows: —In Post Office Account £6B 12s 8d; in Bank £52 15s lid. Total £l2l 8s 7d. Assets: Labour Daily Newspaper, £150; Government War Loan £5O; National Sayings Fund £75; further assets £l5. Total £290 10s.

Junior Band: Aj very pleasant and successful function was held by some 28 members of the Junior Band last evening in the Municipal Band Room. The Mayor, Mr J. M. Robertson was present and congratulated the- boys on the standard of play, and the conductor, Mr K. Smith on the result of his coaching. Some 40 or 50 relatives an friends of the boys were present and all thoroughly enjoyed the playing of the bovs. All the boys took part in solo competitions and some excellent performances were given. The winners of the solos were: Master Keith Caldwell 1; Master Elarl Sara.' 2. Drum solo: Master Ivan Levy 1. Prizes for these solos, were presented by the Mayor and he expressed thanks to the donors of medals, Mrs J. Daily and two persons who wished to remain anonymous. All present were then served with a sumptuous supper provided by the boys’ and .assisted K by some of their parents.
